"How the Bible Helps Today" (posted June 1, 2009)

And the Lord, He is the One who goes before you. He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed.
   - Deuteronomy 31:8

I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you.
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
   - Joshua 1:5, 9

Can you really, each day and in each situation, be strengthened by reading the Bible? Does it really help in your daily cares to know what God's Word has to say about them?

Those questions are often raised, especially by people who only occasionally hear a few selected verses of the Bible. They can hardly imagine that God's Word is really a source of comfort and strength. They may well sleep on their Bible; but to really find strength in God's words---is that realistic? Well, you had better read what the Bible says about difficulties.

First, the verses above deal with encouragements for people in new circumstances. They must decide matters even though they cannot foresee the consequences of their decisions, and they realize that their own strength falls short of what is needed.

Second, these verses show that God knows exactly what is going on. God is aware of the situation; He knows man's weakness, and He knows that encouragement is needed. So, the encouragement comes!

Third, we learn that God does not give to others the task of encouraging us, who might have to give up when things become really difficult. God never lets go! He says: "I am with you."

Fourth---and this really speaks to us---He, the Helper, will lead the way and be with us wherever we go: God, the Almighty, our Vanguard. All we have to do is follow. What more do we want?

So as we can see, we can apply God's encouragements to ourselves today.
