"Jesus: Lord and God" (posted July 6, 2009)

He (Jesus) said to them, "How can they say that the Christ is the Son of David? David himself said in the Book of Psalms, 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at My right hand till I make Your enemies Your footstool." '
Therefore David calls Him 'Lord'; how is He then his Son?"
   - Luke 20:41-44

Is it true that Christ was actually the son of David? Yes, it is, for many of the inspired books of the Old Testament bear witness to this fact. The New Testament also declares this in no uncertain terms, starting from its beginning in Matthew 1:1. That verse reads, "The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham," and then His genealogy follows to prove this to be so.

However, although it was absolutely true that the Messiah would be the son of David, the religious leaders were totally ignorant of something far above this relationship. David himself recognized it as infinitely higher than any human relationship, calling the Messiah "my Lord."

Therefore, it was realized by some---and could have been known by every reader of the Old Testament---that the Messiah would Himself be the Lord God of Israel. Consequently, while Matthew's first verse declares Christ to be Son of David, Mark 1:1 announces, "The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God."

But the elders of Israel disputed this, limiting Christ to the title "Son of David." How powerful, therefore, was the Lord's reference to David's expression about the Messiah being told by God: "Sit at My right hand till I make Your enemies Your footstool" (Psalm 110:1).

How clear a witness this is also to the fact that there is wonderful unity in the Godhead. God is a Trinity---Father, Son, and Holy Spirit---a truth that everyone should recognize. God was manifested on earth in the person of the Lord Jesus. On this occasion, the Lord Jesus baffled the leaders of Israel with a question they in their willful ignorance could not answer.
